How to Obtain Your Contractor License
Follow these 5 steps to obtain your Minnesota General Contractor License.
Step 1:
Register for Sterling Professional Education’s Minnesota General Contractor Exam Prep Course
While this course is not a prerequisite to taking the MN Residential Contractor Exam, experience shows that in-person students have a 90% success rate on the exam, compared to a 60% success rate for online preparation courses. Sign up for your in-person General Contractor Exam Prep Course here.
Step 2:
Register for the Minnesota Residential General Contractor License Exam
Before you can schedule to take the exam you will need to apply for the test. Go to this website and apply to take the exam: https://ims.dli.mn.gov/ims/ You will need to create an account. Once you have validated your account log back in and fill out the information then Click on “+New license or registration” Then click on “Residential Contractors” Then click on “Qualifing Builder” Now continue through the prompts to fill out the application. After you pay the $50 you will receive a reciept in your email. Once you recieve your application number, log back into your account to see available test days.
Because the state is so far out with test dates we recommend doing this first and then looking on our website to see which of our classes will be the closest to your exam day. It is best to test as soon as possible after completing your classroom training, this will ensure the material is fresh in your mind. The exam is offered at DLI’s offices in St. Paul on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and sites in Duluth, Detroit Lakes and New Ulm.
Step 3:
Attend Our Contractor Exam Prep Course
Taking our two-day, in-person exam preparation course gives you the greatest chance of passing your exam. We offer engaging instruction and comprehensive materials in a comfortable classroom setting.
Step 4:
Take the Licensing Exam
Bring a government-issued photo ID plus another form of ID, along with the confirmation number provided when you registered for the test. You will be provided with a copy of the 2020 MN Residential Code at the testing center. Do not bring your own.
Step 5:
Apply for Your Minnesota General Contractor License
Your license application must include
- Your Exam Results
- Proof of Required Insurance
- Applicable Fees
